Biden stressed that this doesn’t mean there won’t be arms shipments to Russia, just that China hasn’t.
“It’s not that they won’t, but they didn’t,” he continued, speaking at a press conference while in Canada on Friday (24/ 3/2023).
Furthermore, he pointed out that his country does not underestimate China and Russia, which are both great countries.
“I don’t take China lightly. I don’t take Russia lightly,” he added.
The US president hinted that the rapprochement between Moscow and Beijing may have been exaggerated.
During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Russia, Russian and Chinese leaders hailed the special nature of their relationship.
However, Beijing has not pledged to provide support for Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also rejected deepening ties between China and Russia.
He said Russia was the junior partner in the relationship and noted that China has so far refused to supply arms to Moscow for its war in Ukraine.
“As we speak today, we haven’t seen them cross that line,” Blinken said of China.
