Joe Biden to Canadian PM condemns riot protest at Brazilian palace

The condemnation came from US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

“The leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico condemn the attack on Brazilian democracy and the peaceful transfer of power after supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings,” the statement said. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro also condemned the actions of thousands of his supporters.

Bolsonaro called the actions of his supporters “the looting of public buildings”. Reported AFPhe considered the raid groundless.

Previously, supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro broke through the blockade and entered three important institutional buildings, namely the Congress, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Presidential Palace in Brasilia.

Based on quoted local media reports Reuters, around 3,000 people were involved in these protests and riots.

The demonstrators expressed their rejection of the results of the second round of the October 30 presidential election.

In this election, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva narrowly won Bolsonaro. Lula was sworn in as president on January 1.

Bolsonaro is skeptical of the credibility of the country’s electoral system. His extremist supporters also questioned the election results.

Several videos circulating on various social networks show the demonstrators breaking down the doors and windows of the building, then destroying the rooms inside.

Amid the chaos, Lula signed a decree on federal intervention in Brasilia. This decree gave the government special powers to restore law and order in the capital.

“Fascist fanatics are doing something that has never happened before in the history of this country. We will hunt down these vandals, and they will be punished accordingly,” Lula said.
