Soccer News: Former Canadian women’s team manager John Herdman says news that team staff used drones to spy on opponents’ practices surprised him, and he firmly believes such practices did not occur under his watch.
Herdman said he would cooperate with Canada Soccer’s internal review team into the drone spying allegations that led to the suspension of women’s team manager Bev Priestman from the Paris Olympics and marred the country’s attempt to defend its Olympic gold medal.
However, Herdman declined to provide details about his experience managing the Canadian national team from 2011 until his departure to coach Toronto FC in 2023.
“I’m pretty sure since I’ve been a head coach at an Olympics or a World Cup, we’ve never participated in any activity,” John Herdman told reporters.
“I have always gone to the Olympics, the World Cup and major events with integrity and the ability to compete at the highest level, following the rules and processes. So, for my part, I will help Canada Soccer as much as I can with this review.”
Herdman led the Canadian women’s team at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics, as well as the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. He also led the men’s national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Following the use of drones, world football’s governing body FIFA has launched its own investigation into Canada Soccer.
