Jokowi asks Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau to inject RI IDR 298 T: not in the form of debt

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) bluntly asked the Prime Minister Canada Justin Trudeau injected 20 billion US dollars or about 298 trillion rupees into Indonesia. However, he asked that the aid not be provided in the form of debt.

Jokowi’s request was conveyed when he held a bilateral meeting with Trudeau at the Rihga Royal Hotel, Hiroshima, Japan, during his visit to the G7 summit on Saturday (5/20).

“I hope $20 billion in financial support can be realized soon, but not in the form of debt,” Jokowi said in an official statement.

The financial assistance requested by Jokowi is related to economic cooperation between Indonesia and Canada. Jokowi wants Canada to deliver on the previously promised deal.

“Request Your Majesty’s support regarding the conclusion of the CEPA agreement between Indonesia and Canada, the realization of the investments of the Canadian Pension Fund which focus on the development of the capital of the archipelago, the development of ‘a funding mechanism for a feasibility study of new projects in Indonesia’, he said.

On this occasion, Jokowi also expressed his hope for the acceleration of the realization of the development of a green airport in North Kalimantan. He also wants the exploration and enrichment of rare earth metals and the establishment of a bilateral working group to be carried out immediately.

Jokowi also appreciated the support of G7 countries, including Canada, which is ready to help Indonesia towards the energy transition.

In addition, he spoke about food security during the meeting of the two countries. He lobbied for the implementation of the agreement between the Indonesian BUMN and the Canadian Commercial Corporation regarding the supply of potash and wheat.

Jokowi and Trudeau also discussed issues within ASEAN, including the situation in Myanmar. Not to mention, Jokowi is also looking forward to Trudeau’s arrival at the ASEAN-Canada summit to be held in September in Indonesia.

“See you in Jakarta, PM Trudeau,” he said.

Jokowi attended the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, held from May 19-21, 2023. Jokowi was personally invited by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

During the event, Jokowi held a number of bilateral meetings with leaders of friendly countries, including Japan and the UK.

The meeting discussed everything from economic cooperation and tourism, investment to the situation in Myanmar.
