Jokowi meets Canadian PM to discuss IKN, North Kalimantan green airport

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday (20/5) at the Rihga Royal Hotel in Hiroshima, Japan. Jokowi asked for Trudeau’s support for the economic cooperation agreement between the two countries.

“We request Your Excellency’s support regarding the conclusion of the CEPA agreement between Indonesia and Canada, the realization of investments by Canadian pension funds that focus on the development of the Indonesian capital, the development of a financing mechanism for feasibility studies of new projects in Indonesia,” Jokowi said in a written statement, Saturday (20/5/2023).

Apart from this, Jokowi also hopes that there will be an acceleration in the realization of the development of a green airport in North Kalimantan, the exploration and enrichment of rare earth metals, as well as the formation of a bilateral working group. Jokowi also appreciated the support of G7 countries, including Canada, to help Indonesia’s energy transition.

“I hope the $20 billion financial support can be realized soon, but not in the form of debt,” Jokowi said.

On food security, Jokowi encouraged the implementation of an agreement between Indonesian state-owned enterprises and the Canadian Commercial Corporation on the supply of potash and wheat.

During the meeting, Jokowi and Trudeau also discussed ASEAN, including the situation in Myanmar. Jokowi said the ASEAN-Canada summit will be held in September 2023 in Indonesia.

“See you soon in Jakarta, Prime Minister Trudeau,” the president said.

The President was also accompanied at the meeting by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung and East Asia Director for the Indonesian Foreign Ministry Santo Darmosumarto.
