Basketball News: Team Canada coach Jordi Fernandez admitted his team could have played even better when it was eliminated by France at the Paris Olympics.
“We didn’t match their energy and their physicality. Offensively, I think it was our most selfish game. We didn’t share the ball,” said coach Jordi Fernandez, recently drafted by the Brooklyn Nets.
“It really hurts. We didn’t play well. We should have played better. I should have helped them.”
France’s lineup change appeared to play a role in allowing them to lead 23-10 and lead by as many as 16 points.
“Even before the game started, we got a sense of how seriously France was taking this match when they changed their starting lineup, replacing Gobert and Fournier with Guerschon Yabusele and Isaiah Cordinier, trying to get more substitutions and flexibility on the field against a big but smaller Canadian team,” wrote Dime’s Robby Kalland.
Fournier finished by making 3 of 6 shots from long range, including a wonderful game-winner, as he made the most of his role change after coming off the bench.
The roster change worked wonders for France, as Yabusele (22 points, five rebounds) and Cordinier (20 points) led the attack. Because Canada had no answer to Yabusele’s physicality in the defensive zone (he was 8 of 9 from the free throw line) and Cordinier gave France a much-needed boost from long range (4 of 5 from three-point range).
Wembanyama managed just seven points on 2-of-10 shooting, but remained a key difference-maker, collecting an incredible 12 rebounds to go along with five assists, three steals and a block.
