Kevin De Bruyne surprised to be Belgium’s best player against Canada

Jakarta: Kevin De Bruyne was surprised by the Man of the Match award he received in Belgium’s victory over Canada in their opening Group F match at the 2022 World Cup, as he felt he had not played well in the game.

Competing at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan, on Thursday, November 24 early morning WIB, Belgium, as the top team, could only narrowly win with a score of 1-0 thanks to Michy Batshuayi’s goal in the 44th minute. De Bruyne was also used as a starter, but Belgium still struggled to increase its lead.

Instead of winning by a big score, Belgium almost conceded the first when Canada got a chance from a penalty after just 10 minutes of play. Fortunately, Alphonso Davies as executioner failed to take advantage of the opportunity as his shot was blocked by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
“I didn’t think I played well in the match. I don’t know why I got this trophy (Man of the Match). Maybe because of this name,” De Bruyne said after the match as reported by AFP’s Antara.

“We didn’t play well enough as a team. We didn’t find any solutions and started the match very badly,” he added.

“When we started to put pressure on them (Canada) in the second half, there was more space. But I don’t think we played well, including myself. But at least we could find a way to win,” he added.

Canada should be an easy opponent for Belgium as they have not participated in the World Cup since the 1986 edition. Then, in the second match of Group F, on Sunday, November 27, Belgium will face Morocco, while Canada will face the 2018 World Cup finalists – top, Croatia. (ANT)
