Koki Watanabe 2024 Canadian Open Men’s Singles Champion

Badminton News: The 2024 Canada Open which was full of surprises finally ended on Monday (8/7) early morning WIB, and Koki Watanabe and Busanan Ongbamrungphan both became the men’s singles and women’s singles champions respectively in the BWF World Tour Super 500 event.

After beating top seed Zhang Beiwen of the United States 21-18, 21-14 in the semi-finals, Thailand’s Ongbamrungphan met fourth seed Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark in the final.

The Thai player led throughout the first and second sets, beating Kjaersfeldt 21-16, 21-14 in 53 minutes.

This is Ongbamrungphan’s first title of 2024 and his first BWF World Tour title since winning the 2022 India Open.

While top seed Anders Antonsen and second seed Kodai Naraoka both lost in the quarter-finals, sixth seed Koki Watanabe faced an unlikely opponent in unseeded player and world number 37 Alex Lanier of France.

Koki Watanabe, who beat Kodai Naraoka in the quarterfinals 21-18, 16-21, 21-11, bounced back from his first-match loss by beating Lanier 20-22, 21-17, 21-6.

This is Koki Watanabe’s first BWF World Tour title since he won the 2023 Swiss Open final by beating Chou Tien Chen 22-20, 18-21, 21-12.

Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, top seeds in the men’s doubles, also had to work hard before beating England’s Ben Lane/Sean Vendy 18-21, 21-14, 21-11.

In mixed doubles, unseeded duo Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund beat their compatriots and seeds Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje 9-21, 24-22, 21-12.

Meanwhile, Japanese top seeds Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi won the Canadian Open by beating Taiwanese Hsu Yin-Hui/Lin Jhih Yun 21-13, 21-13.
