Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Currently, the government is working on regulations related to media royalties or known as “Publisher Rights”. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics is also prepared to deal with the risks of digital platforms in this regard.
“Yes, you have to be ready to deal with it,” Director General of Public Information and Communication (IKP) of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Usman Kansong, told CNBC IndonesiaThursday (2/3/2023).
He hopes Google and Facebook cs won’t leave Indonesia. The reason is, he said, that the platforms were included in the discussion of the draft regulations.
“I hope they don’t leave. We also invite them to discuss the project publisher rights“, he explains. “The platform provides a number of inputs”.
Facebook had left Australia after implementing similar rules a few years ago. At that time, the Australian community could not access or share news from their accounts.
Facebook and Google have also opposed the rule in Australia. Launch page BBC, two platforms claim that regulation misunderstands how the internet works.
But eventually Facebook reopened access in Australia. According to social media, the local government clarified that it will retain the ability to decide whether news appears on Facebook. So not automatically subject to forced negotiations.
Recently, Google has also experimented with blocking news content in Canada, as the country has rules such as Publisher rights. The Canadian government said it was disappointed with Google’s decision, but nothing so far updates more on the continuity of this service in Canada.
Meanwhile, on Press Day last month, President Jokowi pushed for rules Publisher rights can be done in a month. Asked about it, Usman said only that the regulations are still going through several stages.
He also pointed out that if the stages can be completed faster, the better. “There are still several steps: discussions with stakeholders, discussions in the inter-KL committee, public tests, harmonization, before it is signed by the president. The sooner the better,” he said. .
