F1 News: Lance Stroll has been advised to leave Formula 1 team Aston Martin and make new connections with a new team if he is to reach his full potential, according to 1996 world champion Damon Hill.
Stroll joined Aston Martin in 2019 as Racing Point, when his father Lawrence took over the team.
The Canadian driver, who has racked up three podiums during his F1 career, is likely to be heavily protected by the team, his seat unlikely to be in jeopardy given the family ties he has with the team .
This year, Stroll is joined at Aston Martin by Fernando Alonso, who scored three podiums in three races to start the 2023 season with a bang.
Hill said Lance Stroll needed to look ambitious and try to “end” Alonso’s career, in order to stand out in F1.
“It (the form of performance) continues to be maintained, maintained over time. It’s not good,” Hill said on the F1 Nation podcast.
“So he has to fulfill his ambition this year. He has to set his goal as a rider to end Fernando Alonso’s career. It sounds brutal, but that’s what George Russell (against Lewis Hamilton) tried to do. .
“That’s what Nico Hulkenberg is trying to do with (Kevin) Magnussen – you have to establish yourself as the undisputed king, the number one in this team.”
Hill said Stroll currently lacks the skills of a world champion, but could find more potential if he joins another team.
“The question is how do you unlock that potential, it takes a lot of commitment and a lot of sacrifice,” Hill added.
“If he really wants to know the answers, he should go run for another team.”
