Leylah Annie Fernandez loses to Mirra Andreeva in Madrid

Tennis News: Leylah Annie Fernandez won’t have fond memories at the 2023 Madrid Open after losing in the first round to a 15-year-old tennis player.

Mirra Andreeva is a name everyone is talking about lately after the 15-year-old lost just one of her 19 matches this season. He reached the Australian Open final in the junior category, then won back-to-back ITF events in Switzerland and dropped just three sets in 13 matches.

Andreeva only had one chance to participate in the previous WTA tournament, but the Madrid Open gave her another. She was given a wildcard to play the WTA 1000-level tournament, but the match draw made her second professional match in the WTA tournament tough after she faced 2021 US Open runner-up Annie Fernandez.

The Canadian tennis player arrives at the Madrid Open in great shape after playing a key role for her country in winning the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers a few weeks ago. But the 15-year-old proved too tough for the Canadian in her first match.

Andreeva beat the world No. 38 in her first service game before taking a 3-0 lead in the opening set. This was enough for him to develop his game and give him the confidence to continue implementing strategies before finally winning the first set.

On the other hand, the 20-year-old struggled to find the rhythm and that difficulty showed in the second set. On the contrary, Andreeva took a 5-1 lead in this set.

Even though Annie Fernandez seemed to have made up for the loss, after 1 hour 17 minutes Andreeva finally earned her first WTA tournament victory when she took a 6-3 6-4 win.

Additionally, Andreeva will face 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia who will be a bigger challenge for the 15-year-old tennis player.

In other action, Colombian tennis player Camila Osorio successfully eliminated French national tennis player Clara Burel 6-3 6-4 and booked a second-round match against 32nd seed Marta Kostyuk.

Meanwhile, Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif advanced to the second round of the Madrid Open after her Italian opponent Camila Giorgi retired from the match at 4-6 6-4. In the second round, Sherif will challenge the 30th seed, Anhelina Kalinina.
