Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Finland remains in first place on the list of the happiest countries in the world in 2024.

Finland has been the happiest country for six consecutive years, occupying the first position out of 150 countries according to the World Happiness Report.

Reported by Forbes, a report on happy countries each year in honor of the International Day of Happiness on March 20.

The country rankings are based on data from sources such as Gallup’s World Revenue Footprint and take advantage of six factors: social support, income, health, freedom, generosity and freedom from corruption.

This year’s list is still held by Finland, who lead from 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 to 2023. Followed by Demank in second place and Iceland in third place.

According to experts from Aalto University in Finland, several factors make Finland the happiest country in a row.

“Finland seems to have the upper hand here because of the ability of Finland’s welfare system to help its citizens feel taken care of,” said Frank Martela, senior lecturer at Aalto University.

“Things like relatively generous unemployment benefits and nearly free health care help reduce sources of discontent, ensuring that fewer Finns are deeply dissatisfied with their lives,” he continued.

After Finland, Israel now appears in the list of four happy countries and gets rid of Switzerland which is now in eighth position. Not wanting to be left behind, the Netherlands followed Israel in fifth and Sweden in sixth and Norway in seventh.

In addition to the happiest countries in the world, the report also examines the lowest ranked unhappy countries, namely Afghanistan and Lebanon. According to the report, these places had an average life rating five points lower on a scale of 0 to 10. After Afghanistan and Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Congo now top the list of countries the most unfortunate in the world.
