Hoping for closer cooperation in the future, Canadian Ambassador calls Coordinating Minister Airlangga a figure A friend from Canada

In a meeting with Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto on Thursday (15/08), Jess Dutton, Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, personally stated that Coordinating Minister Airlangga was a figure a friend from Canadaand Canada is committed to continuing to strengthen its bilateral relationship with Indonesia. Coordinating Minister Airlangga agreed that cooperation between the two countries would continue to strengthen, and would continue during the next term of the Indonesian government.
The meeting took place at the Economic Office in a warm and friendly atmosphere, addressing a number of strategic issues, including the progress of negotiations. Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA), potential cooperation on clean energy, plans for a Canadian trade mission to Indonesia, and Indonesia’s OECD accession process.
The meeting discussed the progress of the ICA-CEPA negotiation round. “We hope that the negotiations on the ICA-CEPA settlement can be substantially completed soon, if possible, during this government period,” Coordinating Minister Ailangga added. Ambassador Dutton appreciated Coordinating Minister Airlangga’s full support for the immediate completion of the ICA-CEPA. As is known, the eighth round of ICA-CEPA negotiations took place in Ottawa in June 2024 and will continue in the ninth round of negotiations in Toronto in September 2024.
The discussion continued with plans for a Canadian trade mission to Indonesia in December this year. “A Canadian business delegation will come to Indonesia to explore the potential for cooperation in several sectors and to better understand Indonesia’s trade regulations,” explained Ambassador Dutton. Coordinating Minister Airlangga welcomed and supported the trade mission plan.
The meeting also had the opportunity to discuss various green energy collaborations for electricity generation, including the use of atomic energy. “Currently, a feasibility study is underway to develop a small modular reactor in West Kalimantan. “The Indonesian government will continue to encourage the development of clean energy in the next government,” said Coordinating Minister Airlangga. Ambassador Dutton expressed the interest of Canadian business stakeholders and welcomed future collaboration in the clean energy sector with the Indonesian government.
At the end of the meeting, Coordinating Minister Airlangga appreciated Canada’s support for Indonesia’s OECD accession process. Coordinating Minister Airlangga believes that Indonesia’s OECD accession process can become a framework to accelerate Indonesia’s economic reform.
