Majority of Canadians agree Israel should be sanctioned and boycotted

Liputan6.com, Ottawa – The majority of Canadians believe that a boycott of Israel is entirely possible for their country. This action was carried out despite Tel Aviv often violating international law.

This is what emerges from an opinion poll carried out by the leading survey institute EKOS. They said 78 percent of Canadians agreed with the plan to boycott Israel.

66 percent of the 78 percent of citizens who agreed gave the reason why they imposed sanctions and a boycott on Israel following actions taken by the United Nations (UN) to condemn Israel over the construction of Illegal Jewish settlements in the disputed West Bank area.

Green Party of Canada legal expert Dimitri Lascari explained that the poll symbolized Canadian citizens’ disagreement with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government policy on Israeli and Palestinian issues.

“The Canadian government appears determined to perpetuate impunity for Israel’s flagrant human rights violations,” Lascaris said, as quoted by Al-ArabyFriday (3/3/2017).

“The vast majority of Canadians believe that sanctions and boycotts are reasonable measures to ensure Israel’s compliance with international law,” he added.

The president of the NGO Canadian Community Group for Justice and Peace (CJPME), Tom Woodley, declared that these results should serve as a reference for the government in the development of its international policies.

Because, in Canadian politics, the Conservative Party and its allies refuse to encourage the government to impose sanctions on Israel.

“The results of this poll are surprising and provide insight amid the lies perpetrated by the Conservative and Liberal parties who refuse to impose sanctions,” he said.

“While calls for boycotts and sanctions are denounced as a new type of anti-Semitic movement, it is clear that two-thirds of Canadians do not agree with these accusations,” he added.

This poll comes shortly after Canadians had a more negative view of Israel in previous polls. It also sparked accusations that the Canadian government was implementing biased and unfair policies toward Israel.
