Massive Google layoffs continue, DeepMind Canadian office closed

JawaPos.com – The technology and search engine giant, Google, has recently been hit by the mass layoffs (PHK) issue due to ongoing financial efficiency efforts. As a result, up to 12,000 Google employees have been laid off.

But apparently, after laying off 12,000 people, the mass layoffs at Google aren’t over. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has again laid off employees, this time after the company closed its DeepMind office in Edmonton, Canada.

DeepMind is one of Google’s technology companies engaged in artificial intelligence (AI). Reporting from Gizchina, according to reports, DeepMind is closing its offices in Edmonton, Canada.

In addition, the company will also lay off some of its staff from the UK operational office. As explained above, a few days ago, Google’s parent company, Alphabet announced that it was going to lay off 12,000 employees. DeepMind’s move is also part of Alphabet’s efforts to reduce operational costs.

DeepMind’s office in Edmonton, Canada is the only office directly managed by the company. This forces the desktop to consume more resources. All other DeepMind offices are located at Google offices.

The layoffs at this company follow thousands of layoffs at other tech giants, including Amazon, Microsoft and Meta. Some company staff members have the option of moving to another office. There is a DeepMind office in Montreal but it’s in Google’s Montreal office.

For your information, Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, which gives it an edge over most of its competitors in the AI technology competition. But the recent development of ChatGPT, a Microsoft-backed OpenAI chatbot, has increased investor interest in generative AI.

There is now serious competition in the field of AI. “I am convinced of the great opportunities that lie ahead due to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services and our initial investment in artificial intelligence,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet recently.

Meanwhile, when it comes to Google’s previous massive layoffs, this downsizing affected about 6% of all Google employees. The layoffs announcement was made directly by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai via email and uploaded to the company blog.
