The afternoon of qualifying for the race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was drenched in heavy rain, as all teams gambled by switching from wet tires to slicks as track conditions changed.
The gamble, and a bit of luck, was initially rewarded for German Nico Hulkenberg, who placed his Haas alongside the Dutchman on the front row, but was then handed a three-place penalty for violating red flag rules.
The result allowed Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso to take the front row, with another post-session penalty causing another upset.
Meanwhile, seven-time Canadian Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton finished third, his Mercedes teammate George Russell fourth and Hulkenberg fifth.
The pole lead was achieved in 1 minute 25.858 seconds, becoming the 25th pole of Verstappen's career.
“It was very slippery in some places, but we made the right choice, the right time on the track to set a lap time, and I'm very happy to be on pole here,” Verstappen said. “I like driving in the wet.”
“I come from the Netherlands, so we are used to driving on wet roads,” Max said, reported by Reuters.
Verstappen started from pole last year and held off Ferrari's mighty Carlos Sainz to claim his 26th career victory.
Fast forward a year and Verstappen, with another victory on Sunday, could take his career tally to 41, equaling Brazilian Ayrton Senna's record.
Red Bull have dominated this season, winning all seven races, with Verstappen winning five races to open a 53-point gap at the top of the drivers' standings ahead of teammate Sergio Perez, who won the other two races.
