Mercedes driver George Russell to lead pole for F1 Canadian GP

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Mercedes driver George Russell took pole position for the 2024 Formula One (F1) Canadian Grand Prix (GP) at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal after going fastest in the qualifying session, Sunday WIB.

Russell, who started to find the right formula for his car by becoming third fastest on the third day of free practice on Saturday (8/6), continued his positive performance by setting a time of 1 minute 12 seconds to lead the race in Montreal with 70 laps on Monday (10/6) at 01:00 WIB.

In second place is the Red Bull driver who has been the king of the Canadian GP for the last two editions, namely Max Verstappen who set exactly the same time as Russell. However, as Verstappen set his time on the last lap of Q3, pole was still in the hands of the 26-year-old British driver.

“Oh, unbelievable. “It’s really good, really delicious!” Russell was quoted as saying by F1’s official website on Sunday.

“There’s been a lot of hard work at the factory to get this done. We said it in Monaco, we hope this is the start of something for our season, and I think it’s true. I miss that feeling,” he added.

After taking pole, Russell is now aiming for his second F1 series victory after the 2022 Brazilian GP at the Jose Carlos Pace Autodrome in Sao Paolo.

“It’s amazing here. Every time we come to Montreal there’s a good energy from all the fans. I’m excited for tomorrow. “Of course the first step has been taken, but now we’re going for that win,” Lewis Hamilton’s teammate said.

Meanwhile, in third place is the McLaren driver who won the Miami GP, Lando Norris with a time difference of 0.021 seconds slower.

In fourth place was Norris’ partner Oscar Piastri and in fifth place was RB Honda RBPT rider Daniel Ricciardo who caused a surprise.

On the other hand, qualifying in Montreal was a difficult day for Ferrari, who in the previous race had achieved a double podium at the Monaco GP with Charles Lecrerc as winner.

Ferrari duo Leclerc and Carlos Sainz failed to make it past Q2, so they both had to settle for starting the Canadian GP race in P11 and P12.
