Tennis News: Tennis player who played in the Wimbledon final, Milos Raonic has revealed the drastic measures he is taking to contest the Grand Slam in the 2023 season.
The former world No. 3 returned to ATP professional action last month after being sidelined for two seasons with multiple injuries. Part of his motivation was to play Wimbledon one more time in his career. While it’s far from easy for the tennis player who lost around 20kg in a month following a crash diet, it’s not the healthiest thing to do, he admits .
“For a year, all I did was go to the gym and lift weights, something like that. At first I was too focused on the muscles, then I got a little too heavy because that I wasn’t doing cardio like I used to,” says Raonic.
“I lost the first 20kg in the first four weeks. It might not be the healthiest thing, but I didn’t reach my goal either. I eat a standard skirt steak a times a day (nothing more) and only drink water.
The Canadian tennis player said the decision to take this extreme step was because he hadn’t achieved his desired weight loss goal. Although many sports nutritionists do not recommend eating just one piece of meat a day and no additives.
Despite this, the Canadian achieved his goal of returning to Wimbledon, where he achieved his best Grand Slam result to date by reaching the final in 2016 despite finishing second (losing to Andy Murray). After going through the first round of the 2023 season edition, his steps stopped in the second round against the 16th seed, Tommy Paul, who won in four sets.
“In general it’s a positive thing, but you wish things were different,” Raonic added.
“I’m relieved to have come here after two seasons. It wasn’t a very competitive game, to be honest. From the final standings, it might have looked like this, but over the course of two and a half sets, I was pretty much racing for the points. It wasn’t a nice situation, but I tried to take advantage of a difficult situation.”
Once again, the 32-year-old tennis player was plagued with physical issues. This time it was a swollen knee when he fought Paul. He took advantage of the break to go to the bathroom, but admitted that it was quite impossible for him to climb the stairs. In addition, he also had shoulder problems. It was certainly a very frustrating situation for the tennis player who indicated that this season was her last appearance as a tennis player at Wimbledon.
“I would more likely say no than yes. I’ll come and enjoy it, but I don’t think I’ll play again,” Raonic said.
As for life outside of tennis, the Canadian hopes to spend some time away from the public eye after growing up with so much media attention on her.
Before Raonic hung up his racquet, whenever that happened he was aiming to return to the Masters 1000, Rogers Cup tournament next month for as long as his body could last.
