MANILA (AP) National basketball coach Gordon Herbert is hoping to advance to the group stage in the Philippine capital Manila for the World Cup draw. “Due to the logistical and travel situation, it will be interesting to play in the Philippines,” Herbert said ahead of the 2 p.m. ceremony (Magnasport).
The World Cup takes place from August 25 to September 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. The first four sets will take place in Manila, two in Okinawa, Japan and two in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The final round will then take place in Manila, so the German team will save them the stress of the trip if they also play the preliminary round in the Philippines.
Spain was expelled as an opponent
Germany, ranked 11th in the world, is in third place. A total of 32 participants were split into eight pots, each containing four teams. In addition to the world ranking, geographical aspects also play a role in the draw. It is clear that Germany will not be in a group with Spain (Pot 1).
Herbert didn’t care about the three opponents in the preliminary round. “I don’t care who we are up against,” said the Canadian. “To progress, you have to play well.” The top two teams from each group advance to the final.
Herbert relied heavily on the team that last won a bronze medal at the European Championships on home soil. Additionally, NBA professionals Moritz Wagner and Maximilian Kleber can join the team. Preparations should start in Bonn at the end of July.
