New fighter in Ukraine, a former Canadian general accused of sexual assault

According to Canadian media, Cadieu is accused of raping a student on the campus of the Royal Canadian Military College.

He retired in April.

Canadian news outlet Ottawa Citizen reported that Cadieu pointed out in an email from Ukraine that he had been informed of the charges and that he was “arranging to return to Canada from Ukraine.”

He has previously denied any wrongdoing.

In a report released last month, Louise Arbour, a former International Criminal Court prosecutor and retired Supreme Court justice, criticized the military’s handling of sexual misconduct cases.

The report was released after a task force in 2015 found that the Canadian military had an “environment that is hostile to women … and conducive to more serious incidents of sexual harassment and assault.”

Earlier in April 2021, the Canadian military reported to the country’s parliament that 581 sexual assaults and 221 incidents of sexual harassment had occurred since 2015.
