Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said the block was carried out after Canadian law required them to pay compensation to national media outlets.
“The only way we can reasonably comply is to end the availability of news content in Canada,” Stone reportedly said on his official X account, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Last June, the Canadian Parliament passed a new law known as the Online News Act.
The rules require platforms digital media like Meta collaborate commercially with mass media, both print, online and radio.
Canada sees regulation as necessary so that mass media can be compensated for lost advertising revenue as readers have migrated to social media.
If negotiations fail, the law requires both parties to resort to binding arbitration to determine appropriate compensation.
Before the law was passed, Meta sent a warning last year to block it platformsinformation services, as happened in Australia in 2021.
