“At first she was the best tennis player. He dictates the game. Then I started to find my rhythm of serving and playing on the court. I just play it. Just play it. I sense he’s a bit nervous. That’s what happened, the change in dynamics is very quick at this level.”
The 2022 Wimbledon champions entered the Adelaide International 1 quarter-finals with a 7-0 lead in their head-to-head against Shapovalov, 23, who created three break point chances in the first set only to that the Serb saves. After that, the Serb made no mistake to take the lead and win the first set.
The first seed’s impressive defensive and offensive combination proved too much for Shapovalov, but the Canadian didn’t give up and tied the game at 3-3.
But the world number 18 couldn’t hold off the first seed in the ninth game which lasted a marathon before victory went to the Serb.
The win marked another impressive victory for the number one seed in the city where she won her title in 2007.
