Novak Djokovic opts out of Masters 1000 tournament, Rogers Cup

Tennis News: Novak Djokovic will not participate in the 2023 Rogers Cup (Canadian Open) to be held in Toronto after his withdrawal from the Masters 1000 tournament.

After losing the 2023 Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz, the 36-year-old is spending time with his family. And although it has been reported that he wants to challenge the Spaniard at the upcoming US Open, many would like to see them by then.

One of the tournaments where the two tennis players have the opportunity to meet is at the Rogers Cup which this season for the number of men’s singles will be held in Toronto, after the names of the two tennis players appear on the list of players who will participate in the tournament. But recently, news broke that the Serb won’t be competing in Toronto and that has now been confirmed.

Talking about the tournament he will be taking part in, the 23-time Grand Slam winner made no mention of the Rogers Cup, which will be held from August 7-13, and it is now clear why after announcing his retirement.

The world number 2 cited fatigue as the reason for the withdrawal and in a published statement thanked tournament director Karl Hale for understanding his decision.

“I’ve always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after talking to my team, we’re confident it’s the right decision to make. I would like to thank Karl Hale, Tournament Director, for understanding this decision. I really hope I can come back to Canada and Toronto in the next few seasons to play in front of such amazing crowds,” Djokovic said.

For the tournament, the decision made by the Australian Open champions for the 2023 season is certainly not the best news as they will certainly feel happy to be able to host another edition of the hot match between Djokovic and Alcaraz. But that will have to wait, at least until the 2023 Cincinnati Open, when both players’ names also feature in the Masters 1000 tournament.

While many fans are saddened by the news, at least one person is happy with the decision, namely Christopher Eubanks. The American had a sensational run at Wimbledon this season and after Djokovic’s withdrawal, he was able to step straight into the Rogers Cup main draw.
