Tennis News: Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic hasn’t spent much time finding his best form after nearly two months without competition.
The 88-year-old won’t face much drama as he beat Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2022 Tel Aviv Open.
“What a great atmosphere, thank you very much,” Djokovic said. “I love the court, it’s so close and there are so many people. The crowd here is really passionate about this sport, about tennis, and I’m really excited to be here and play here, in front of all of you. So thank you for your support.
In her first match since the Laver Cup, the former world No. 1 appeared at roughly the same high level as when she picked up a straight-sets win over American Frances Tiafoe in the Laver Cup before suffering a crushing defeat against the Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime. He didn’t show the negative effects of the defeat at the Tel Aviv Open.
Djokovic broke Andujar four times and faced no break point opportunities in a game that lasted 1 hour 27 minutes.
Standing between Djokovic and a place in the Tel Aviv Open semi-finals is Canadian Vasek Pospisil who beat home side Edan Leshem 6-3, 6-2.
In another match, French tennis player Arthur Rinderknech battled his way to the quarter-finals of the Tel Aviv Open. He got a match point opportunity en route to a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 win over third seed Diego Schwartzman.
When the two players first met, 27-year-old Rinderknech endured the tension in the deciding set tie-break. He got a match point opportunity at 6/7 before eventually converting his second match point opportunity.
In the quarterfinals, Rinderknech will face Roman Safiullin.
Meanwhile, British tennis player Liam Broady maintained a convincing performance, including beating fifth seed Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to book a quarter-final match against the second seed, Marin Cilic.
Frenchman Constant Lestienne qualified for the second quarter-final of the season after beating Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4, 6-2.
