Tennis News: 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu and former world number 2 Paula Badosa have withdrawn from the New York Grand Slam due to injury.
Spanish tennis player Badosa is set to meet Venus Williams in the first round of the US Open 2023. Now, the host tennis player will face a qualifier or a lucky loser in the first round.
The world number 47 has been unable to compete since being forced to withdraw from the second round of Wimbledon due to a back injury. On social media, he said the injury he suffered forced him to end the 2023 season early.
“After struggling for months to be able to compete again, I am ending my season,” Badosa wrote on Twitter.
“Anyone of you who knows me knows how much I love competition and how difficult it was for me to make this decision. We have tried everything with my team, but the pain does not let me move forward. .”
Meanwhile, the Canadian tennis player is set to face Ukrainian national Lesia Tsurenko in the first round of the 2023 US Open. Now, Tsurenko will start the Grand Slam by facing a qualifier or a lucky loser.
The Canadian tennis player suffered a broken back while competing in Washington and Montreal. The same injury forced him to miss the Cincinnati tournament, but he hopes to compete in New York.
The world number 51 has the chance to play all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single season for the second time in her career. With this latest blow, he has now missed five of the 15 Grand Slams he has played since winning the US Open in 2019.
Earlier this season, the 23-year-old beat Victoria Azarenka in the first round of French Open and beat Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina to reach the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
But since becoming the first tennis player from his country to win a number four Grand Slam singles title last season, Andreescu has never again been the talk of the town in the Grand Slam title chase.
