PIFA, International – The United States (US) Coast Guard announced on Sunday (6/25/2023) that it will investigate the disappearance of the tourist submarine Titanic to determine the cause of the explosion.
The Titan submarine, which carried five people to the wreckage of the Titanic, was officially declared to have exploded and killed its entire crew on Thursday (6/22), after losing contact on Sunday (6/18). The wreckage of the Titan submarine, which weighed about 9,071 kilograms, was found about 488 meters from the Titanic wreck in North Atlantic waters.
Investigation chief Captain Jason Neubauer said his team had mapped the crash site. However, he did not reveal the timeline for the investigation.
“The Marine Investigation Board meeting is the highest level of investigation conducted by the US Coast Guard,” Neubauer said, citing CNN Indonesia on Monday (6/26).
The US investigation team will work closely with other national and international investigative authorities, including the US National Transportation Safety Board, Canadian Transport Safety Board, French Marine Victims Investigation Council and UK Marine Accidents Investigation Branch .
According to Neubauer, evidence is currently being collected at the port of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in coordination with Canadian authorities.
The Coast Guard Board may then make recommendations to impose civil or criminal penalties as appropriate.
“My ultimate goal is to prevent similar occurrences by making the necessary recommendations to advance maritime security around the world,” he added.
OceanGate Expeditions, the company that owns and operates the Titan submarine, is based in Everett, USA. However, the submarine is registered in the Bahamas. Meanwhile, Titan’s carrier, Polar Prince, is registered in Canada. (yd)
