In statements Tuesday, Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stressed that the meeting was aimed at resolving differences between the two countries, with Ottawa emphasizing that it values its strong diplomatic relations with India.
“We are in contact with the Indian government. We are very concerned about the safety of Canadian diplomats and we will continue to engage personally because we believe it is better to conduct diplomatic conversations in private,” Joly told reporters .
As loaded ReutersOn Thursday (10/05), the meeting proposal was made after the Indian government ordered Canada to withdraw its 41 diplomats from New Delhi by October 10.
Relations between the two countries have become very tense due to suspicions expressed by Canada over the involvement of Indian government agents in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader and Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, last June in Canada.
India rejected these allegations and considered Canada's accusations unreasonable.
The dispute has led to further visa suspensions for Canadians, with New Delhi asking Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country.
