Badminton News: Young Indian badminton player Priyanshu Rajawat continued his good form and advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event of the Canada Open World Tour Super 500 with a straight-set win over Japan’s Takuma Obayashi in Calgary, Canada.
Rajawat, ranked 39th in the world, defeated Obayashi, ranked 33rd in the world with a score of 21-19, 21-11 in 38 minutes on Friday (5/7) morning WIB to advance to the last eight, where he will face top seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark.
Besides Rajawat, India’s third seeds in women’s doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, have also qualified for the quarter-finals.
Treesa and Gayatri came back from a match down to beat Natasja P Anthonisen of Denmark and Alyssa Tirtosentono of the Netherlands 17-21, 21-7, 21-8 in a round of 16 match that lasted 48 minutes.
The Indian pair will next face Pei Shan Hsieh and En-Tzu Hung of Chinese Taipei.
However, it was the end for all other Indians who were in action in the second half. Anupama Upadhyaya and Tanya Hemanth lost their second round matches in women’s singles.
While Anupama fought hard against Canada’s Michelle Li before losing 14-21 21-17 13-21, Tanya was eliminated in straight games 11-21 13-21 against third seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand.
In men’s doubles, Indian pair Krishna Prasad Garaga and K Sai Pratheek lost 21-19 18-21 17-21 to Bing-Wei Lin and Ching Heng Su of Chinese Taipei.
Indian mixed doubles players Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde were also eliminated, losing 15-21, 21-19, 9-21 to Taipei’s eighth seeds Cheng Kuan Chen and Yin-Hui Hsu.
