Bali police have stressed that their staff were not involved in the alleged extortion of a Canadian fugitive by Interpol Stephane Gagnon (50). Bali Police Public Relations Chief Kombes Satake Bayu Setianto said the officer who was reported by Gagnon’s lawyers was a member of the national police headquarters.

“Both are still under investigation for further examination of the veracity of what was reported by the Canadian citizen’s attorney. National Police Headquarters will advise later,” Satake said.
The police are also still investigating the statement of Gagnon, who admits having been blackmailed by a broker in a case suspected by elements of the national police headquarters in the amount of 1 billion rupees.
“The report is 1 billion rupees but an investigation is still ongoing,” he said.
Based on the report from suspect Gagnon’s attorney, Bali police postponed the surrender to immigration pending orders from Divhubinter Interactive Police Headquarters in Jakarta. According to the original plan, Gagnon’s handover from Bali Police to Immigration would take place on Sunday, June 4, 2023.
“From the Canadian citizen’s lawyer, he reported that there was extortion by the police at the national police headquarters. Based on the evidence and information submitted by the person, according to Pahrur, the money was sent to elements of the Divhubinter Polri and several other elements.
“Evidence of transfers, conversations and videos of the actions of these individuals are available and can be submitted if there is an investigation by the national police or the KPK to take action against these elements,” Pahrur said.
Shortly after, he continued, the person demanded Rp. 3 billion in cash, with a note that if the money was available on April 20, 2023, Gagnon would not be arrested. Gagnon also refused the offer until May 19, 2023, Gagnon was arrested at his residence in Canggu, Bali.
