Badminton News: Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen qualified for the last 16 of the Canada Open World Tour Super 500 tournament with a convincing win at the event held in Calgary, Canada.
PV Sindhu, seeded fourth in women’s singles, comfortably booked her place in the next round by beating Canadian Talia NG in back-to-back matches 21-16 21-9 on Wednesday night.
In men’s singles, Lakshya Sen looked impressive beating second seed and rival Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand 21-18, 21-15.
Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu will face Japan’s Natsuki Nidaira, while Sen will face Brazilian Ygor Coelho.
However, defending champion B Sai Praneeth’s appearance in the tournament ended in a 12-21, 17-21 loss to Brazil’s Coelho.
Ruthvika Shivani Gadde was also eliminated early in the women’s singles, losing 12-21, 3-21 to Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the first round.
Meanwhile, the pair of world number 37 Krishna and Vishnuvardhan, who were runners-up at the 2021 Orleans Masters and 2022 Syed Modi International, recorded an easy win in two games with a score of 21-14, 21-16 over Chinese Taipei’s Chen Zhi Ray and Lu Chen in the Round of 16 on Wednesday (5/7) evening local time.
The young Indian pair will now face Indonesian second seeds, Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan who qualified for the round of 16 by beating United States representatives, Chen Zi Yi / Presley Smith in two consecutive matches on the score of 21-14, 21-13 in a single game in 24 minutes.
