Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral is a public holiday in Canada

OTTAWA, KOMPAS.com– Prime Minister Canada Justin Trudeau announced that September 19, the day of the funeral Queen Elizabeth IIwill be a national holiday in the form of mourning following the death of the Queen.

“On September 19, Canadians across the country will pay tribute to Canada’s longest-serving leader, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Trudeau said in a statement Tuesday.

“For most Canadians, she is the only queen we have ever known and many of us feel deep affection and appreciation for her devotion to Canada,” Trudeau continued.

Reported ReutersSeptember 19, which falls on a Monday, will be a public holiday for all Canadian federal government employees.

However, the private sector, provincial governments and territorial governments are not required to follow suit.

New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador have issued a statement declaring Monday, September 19 a statutory holiday.

Ontario will observe a day of mourning on Monday. However, some places like schools will remain open.

Canada has declared a period of mourning following the death of Elizabeth at Balmoral Castle, Scotland on Thursday (8/9/2022).

However, Trudeau’s announcement of a day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II was met with opposition from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Canadian Labor Minister Seamus O’Regan said private sector employers were encouraged to give workers a day off, but were not required to do so.

Trudeau, who said Queen Elizabeth II was one of his favorite people, was due to attend the Queen’s funeral.

Canada is one of 14 countries that still consider kings or queens English as head of state.
