TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – Recognized as one of the greatest MMA athletes of all time, Demetrious Johnson’s journey to fame was marred by many obstacles.
DJ, the nickname of Demetrious Johnson, is recorded as the owner of the record for the most consecutive title defenses in the UFC (11) which was achieved from 2012 to 2018. So far, this record has not been matched by any athlete.
In 2018, DJ decided to seek a new adventure for a more challenging career. He also joined ONE Championship to compete against elite athletes from across the martial arts spectrum.
After riding a three-fight winning streak and becoming the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Tournament Champion at the end of 2019, DJ has the chance to challenge Adriano Moraes, the ruler and owner of the ONE Flyweight Gold Belt. Their match will take place in April 2021.
Unfortunately, his attempt to win the ONE Championship world title was thwarted. Adriano Moraes excelled and became the first person to hand DJ the first TKO loss of his long career.
A sharp knee knocked DJ down and couldn’t resist a follow up attack forcing the referee to stop the fight.
A year later, after beating Rodtang Jitmuangnon in a hybrid MMA and Muay Thai match, the fighter nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” was given the opportunity to challenge Moraes again.
Their match will culminate in ONE Fight Night 1: Moraes vs. Johnson held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on August 27. The event also marks the premiere of ONE Championship on Prime Video which airs during prime time in the United States and Canada.
