Rebecca Marino defeats Fernanda Contreras Gomez in Monterrey

Tennis News: Canadian tennis player Rebecca Marino has managed to advance to the second round of the 2023 Monterrey Open, but not without an uphill battle.

The 32-year-old tennis player fought hard to knock out host tennis player, Fernanda Contreras Gomez with a tight 7-6, 7-6 result in the first round of the Monterrey Open which lasted 1 hour 42 minutes.

World No. 74 Marino fired 11 aces in their first close encounter, more than the four aces of 25-year-old Contreras Gomez. She also won 82% of the points on her first serve and converted one of four break point opportunities she created while saving one of two she faced.

For a spot in the Monterrey Open quarterfinals, Marino will face fifth seed Lin Zhu who crushed Hungarian tennis player Anna Bondar 6-4, 7-6.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two tennis players and the Chinese national, Lin outscored them 2-1 head to head, including winning their last encounter in the first round of the Australian Open 2023 in straight sets.

The winner of the two tennis players will face Slovak tennis player Anna Karolina Schmiedlova or American tennis player Caroline Dolehide in the quarter-finals.

World number 100 tennis player Karolina Schmiedlova was surprisingly able to defeat second seed Marie Bouzkova with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 result.

Throughout the match, Karolina Schmiedlova won 74% of the points on her first serve. He created ten break point opportunities and converted five. He also saved five of the seven break point chances he faced.

The 206th tennis player in the world, Dolehide, who was due to go through the qualifying round, also appeared surprising. He appeared powerful when he smashed world number 69 Jule Niemeier with a crushing 6-1, 6-0 result.

Throughout the match, Dolehide won 81% of the points on his first serve and saved all three break point opportunities he faced. He also converted six of the ten break point opportunities he created.

In another action, Belgian tennis player Ysaline Bonaventure struggled to beat Greek tennis player Despina Papamichail 7-6 4-6 6-1. In the second round, she will meet the sixth seed, Katerina Siniakova or Kamilla Rakhimova.
