Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and others with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of listeriosis may include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle pain, severe headache, and neck stiffness.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has not announced a public recall of the frozen waffle product; However, TreeHouse Foods said the agency had been notified.
The CFIA has previously warned that foods contaminated with listeria don’t necessarily look or smell unpleasant, but can still make people sick.
Representative Metro Inc. said in a statement that the affected Selection waffles had been removed from all affected Metro Inc. banners.
Sobeys Inc., Walmart Canada and Loblaws Inc. did not respond to requests for information by publication.
Global News reached out to the CFIA for comment but did not receive a response Sunday.
There have been several product recalls this year due to possible listeria contamination and a deadly outbreak.
Three people have died and 20 people have been hospitalized following an outbreak of listeria in plant-based milk that began in July. The Public Health Agency of Canada declared the outbreak on October 11.
Earlier this month, beef tongue jelly contaminated with listeria led to four cases of listeriosis in Ontario.
There is much more to come.
