Yassine Bounou led the Moroccan national team to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup after facing Portugal in the quarter-finals on Saturday (10/12/2022) evening WIB.
Bounou’s skilful appearance under rule succeeded in repelling the Portuguese onslaught led by Bruno Fernandes.
This result also made Morocco the first African team to be able to set foot in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
After the game against Portugal, Bounou won the man of the match award, but he shared the trophy with Youssef En-Nesyri who scored the game’s only goal.
Moreover, Bounou became the first African goalkeeper to score four clean sheets that is to say zero goals in a single edition of the World Cup.
Bounou kept a clean sheet against Croatia (0-0) and Belgium (2-0) in the group stage. Morocco only conceded once on an own goal against Canada on the closing night of Group F.
This feat continued when Morocco faced Spain in the round of 16. Bounou and his colleagues were able to resist the onslaught of the Matador team until they finally won on penalties.
The number of 3 clean sheets alone is a new record for an African team in the World Cup. But Bounou’s genius didn’t stop there.
The Sevilla goalkeeper scored again clean sheets against Portugal in the quarter-finals. Bounou was able to stem the danger that threatened his goal.
With this result, Bounou has the chance to win the Golden Gloves trophy, aka the Best Goalkeeper of the 2022 World Cup.
Previously, Bounou received the Zamora Trophy aka Best Goalkeeper in LaLiga (Spanish League) and entered the World’s Best Goalkeeper Candidate for the Frame Football version.
