Jakarta – Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan or Zulhas aims for negotiations on the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) to be completed in 2024.
Zulhas acknowledged this, as part of economic cooperation efforts that are also underway between Canada and ASEAN countries, and which are also expected to conclude next year.
The Minister of Commerce expressed this during a bilateral meeting with Canadian Minister of Commerce, Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Mary Ng on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in San Francisco , in the USA.
He emphasized that relations between Indonesia and Canada currently continue to work well and that Indonesia is ready to assist Canada at any time with any problems or complaints that need to be resolved immediately in the partnership agreement. .
“Relations between Indonesia and Canada regarding ICA-CEPA are very good. We will assist Canada at any time in the event of a complaint,” Zulhas said in his statement on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
Zulhas hopes that Canada will be able to meet the food needs of the Indonesian people, including fruits, meat, soybeans, wheat and flour. Because, he admitted, Indonesia still needs about 1 million kg of meat and 13 million kg of flour.
The Minister of Commerce believes that this ICA-CEPA cooperation will also allow Canada to export its food products to Indonesia. In fact, Zulhas also ensures that each product is certified halal, so that it can be consumed by the Indonesian Muslim community.
Through ICA-CEPA, Zulhas hopes that Canadian representatives will also be able to visit Indonesia more often to directly discuss the sustainability and progress of cooperation.
“Indonesia will help Canada achieve its goals related to cooperation with ASEAN countries,” he said.
