RI rejects proposed debate on Uyghur issues at UN Human Rights Council, here’s why

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Indonesian government has revealed its reasons for rejecting the debate on the issue of Uyghurs and Muslim minorities in Xinjiang province, China, during a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council ( UN).

Director of Human Rights and Humanities at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Achsanul Habib, said Indonesia took several things into consideration when rejecting the proposal.

“Why Indonesia is in the ‘no’ position is because we don’t want the Human Rights Council to be politicized for purposes related to political rivalry,” Achsanul said during a briefing. a virtual press conference, Friday (10/07/2022).

“Fundamentally, (this decision) according to the established mandate aims to be a constructive forum for countries to have an impartial dialogue, and also to reach agreements with the aim of good results, of meaningful progress,” he said. added.

In this regard, Achsanul said, Indonesia has been cooperating, coordinating, consulting all parties with the proponent countries, Western countries, the People’s Republic of China and in particular, as sister countries of the Organization of Cooperation Islamic (OIC).

“We have also had in-depth communications and discussions with OIC countries that are also members of the UN Human Rights Council. With this development, the OIC has also agreed that the Human Rights Council human rights, as a mandate, should not be used for political purposes. We hope that the Human Rights Council will not vote-to-choose, not be selective in choosing the issues to be discussed”, he explained.

Achsanul also explained that when it comes to concerns about alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang, human rights instruments in the human rights mechanism are not the only way. “Dialogues with various parties, especially China, bilaterally and through the OIC, we continue to do so,” he added.

“In this case, the most important thing is in line with the spirit built by the United Nations, namely that the resolution of problems related to human rights or conflicts must be prioritized in an inclusive manner, involving the participants or the parties in the country. That’s generally what I can say,” he concluded.

The questions proposed in the forum were previously formulated by the United States (USA) and supported by Great Britain, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
