CANADA A Canadian was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison in the United States for helping the Islamic State group in Syria.
The US Department of Justice said in a statement that Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, 37, from Edmonton, Alberta, was extradited from Canada to San Diego in 2019.
According to the statement, Abdullahi pleaded guilty in federal court in San Diego to all charges in December 2021.
He is accused of helping six US nationals to travel to Syria, where they joined the Islamic State.
To help raise funds, Abdullahi admitted to committing an armed robbery at an Edmonton jewelry store in 2014.
The six included his three cousins from Edmonton, his 18-year-old cousin from Minneapolis and a San Diego resident named Douglas McAuthur McCain.
The six people later died fighting for the Islamic State, the justice ministry said.
