Saudi Arabia and Canada to restore diplomatic relations

Riyadh

Kingdom Saudi Arabia declared that he would restore full diplomatic relations with Canada. The two countries are known to have clashed over human rights in 2018, leading Riyadh to expel the Canadian ambassador and freeze any new trade.

According to AFP, on Wednesday (24/5/2023), the decision was also announced by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomatic stimulus policy came after talks between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit in Bangkok last year.

“It has been decided to restore the level of diplomatic relations with Canada to their previous state,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In 2018, the Saudi government expelled Canada’s ambassador and recalled its own envoy from Ottawa, while freezing all new trade. This tension has arisen due to Canada’s strong calls for the release of activists imprisoned in Saudi Arabia.

On Wednesday, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said the two countries would “appoint a new ambassador” and a statement from the Canadian Foreign Ministry named Jean-Philippe Linteau as Ottawa’s new envoy to the Saudi kingdom.

Saudi Arabia did not mention its selection of ambassador.
