Copa America News 2024: Canadian midfielder Tajon Buchanan suffered a lower leg injury while training for the 2024 Copa America quarterfinal match, sending a wave of concern to the Canucks.
Buchanan, who is 25 and plays for Italian Serie A club Inter Milan, was a key part of Canada’s team in its Copa America debut.
The Canadian national team confirmed that Buchanan was taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment following an incident during a training session.
“He was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment,” the Canadian national team said in a statement. “We will provide updates if there are any further developments.”
According to a report from Canadian sports media outlet TSN, Canadian defenseman Alistair Johnston explained that Tajon Buchanan’s injury occurred after a number of players “collided” during a practice session, and that practice was subsequently cancelled after an ambulance arrived.
Johnston also described the mood of the team as “somber” following the tragic incident.
Canada managed to finish second in Group A of the Copa America, finishing the group stage behind Argentina, with a record of 1-1-1: wins, losses, draws.
They are set to face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Friday (05/07) in Arlington, Texas. Buchanan’s injury adds to the concerns of the Canadian national team as they prepare for the challenge of the round of 16.
