Signaling many Chinese police stations to operate, Canada takes strong action: Okezone News

CANADA Marco Mendicino, Canadian Minister of Public SecuritySunday (14/5), said there could be more”chinese police stationoperating in Canada.

He made the remarks during an interview with a Canadian television station, referring to police statements two months ago investigating the use of two community centers in Montreal to intimidate and harass Canadians from Chinese origin.

“I believe that (the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) has taken concrete steps to combat foreign interference with regard to so-called police stations. If new police stations keep popping up, they will take strong action,” Mendicino told CTV’s Question Period, as quoted by VOA.

Mendicino made the remarks just days after Canada and China expelled their respective diplomats.

Canadian police said in March they were investigating several community centers in Montreal. Earlier this month, Canadian media Canadian Press reported that community centers were still operating normally, despite a statement from a minister that all classified offices in Canada had been closed.

Last week, Canada expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei after an intelligence report accused him of trying to target a Canadian lawmaker who criticized China’s treatment of Xinjiang’s Uighur Muslim minority.

China denies accusations of interfering in Canadian affairs. The next day, China expelled Canadian diplomat Jennifer Lynn Lalonde from Shanghai.

As is well known, the government of Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau is under pressure to look more seriously at allegations of Chinese interference and conduct a public inquiry. For this reason, the government has appointed a special investigator to deal with this problem.

Several Canadian news agencies have published reports citing unnamed intelligence sources alleging that the Chinese government staged a scheme to interfere in Canada’s last two elections. China again denied the charges.

Trudeau said China was looking to interfere in the 2019 and 2021 polls, although it wouldn’t change the result. Last week, he added that Canada was “not intimidated” by China’s retaliation.
