Smoke from a fire that has been raging in the Canadian province of Quebec for weeks has been filmed blanketing the Midwest. These conditions have caused air quality to drop to unhealthy levels in every US state.
“Unhealthy levels of smog are expected in the Midwest region today. Smoke from forest fires in Canada is impacting the region. If you must be outdoors, consider wearing an N-95 mask to help reduce the smoke you breathe,” the US National Weather Service (NWS) quoted on the Space page wrote on Friday (6/30/ 2023).
The movement of the smoke was observed from orbit by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite East (GOES-East), also known as GOES-16. This satellite is operated by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison CIMSS) shared the image on Twitter on Thursday, June 29, 2023. “GOESEast reveals heavy wildfire smoke,” UW- wrote Madison CIMSS.
On Monday, June 26, 2023, NASA’s Earth Observatory released images collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA’s Terra satellite, showing smoke drifting over the Atlantic reaching Spain and northern Portugal.
Smoke from Canadian forest fires has also reached other European countries. On the morning of Thursday June 29, 2023, the EU’s Copernicus Twitter account shared an image taken by the Sentinel 3 satellite on Wednesday June 28, 2023 showing smoke reaching the Italian island of Sardinia.
The smoke reaching Europe is higher in the atmosphere than in the United States (US), so the health impact is less pronounced.
