Jakarta (ANTARA News) – House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto received a visit from 11 Canadian senators led by Raynell Andreychuk at the House of Representatives building in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said inter-parliamentary cooperation should be developed by the two countries to strengthen existing bilateral relations.
“We, the DPR RI for the period 2014-2019, are ready to continue the cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries which is going well so far,” he said.
The DPR President said Indonesia’s cooperation with Canada was going quite well, with total trade value reaching US$2.4 billion in 2013.
“In the future, we hope that the value of trade between the two countries can continue to increase,” Novanto said.
He also hopes that the value of Canadian investments in Indonesia, which in the first quarter of 2014 reached US$261.6 million, can continue to increase.
He explained that so far, Indonesia and Canada have cooperated in the fields of economy, counter-terrorism, transnational crime, law and human rights, education, aviation, livestock, agriculture and forestry, and socio-culture.
In addition, he said, Indonesia also hopes for Canada’s participation in the development of the maritime sector.
