“A high-altitude reconnaissance balloon has been detected and its movement actively tracked by NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command),” National Defense said in a statement.
“Canadians are safe and Canada is taking steps to ensure the safety of its airspace, including monitoring for a potential second incident,” the statement added. IndependentFriday (3/2/2023).
The statement also said that officials from NORAD, the Canadian Defense Forces, the Department of National Defense and other partners have assessed the situation and are working in close coordination.
The National Defense Command said Canadian intelligence services are working closely with their U.S. partners and continue to take all necessary steps to protect sensitive Canadian information from foreign intelligence threats.
“We remain in frequent contact with our U.S. allies as the situation evolves,” National Defense said.
The warning from Canadian defense officials came just hours after the US military said it was tracking a high-altitude Chinese spy balloon it suspected was moving over the northern United States.
