STRATEGINEWS.co, Jakarta — Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Canadian Open because he hasn’t fully recovered from the stomach injury he sustained. The Spaniard previously suffered a tear in his stomach while playing at Wimbledon last year.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion withdrew ahead of his semi-final against Nick Kyrgios.
Nadal was due to return to Montreal next week, but on Friday he revealed he would not travel to Canada to compete in the tournament he has won five times.
“From the rest days and my return to the next training, everything went well this week. Four days ago I also started working on the serve and yesterday after training I have a bit of discomfort that is still there,” Nadal wrote on his Twitter account.
“We decided not to travel to Montreal and to continue training without forcing ourselves. I sincerely thank the tournament director, Eugene [Lapierre]and his entire team for the understanding and support they have always shown me and today was no exception.”
“I can’t wait to play again in Montreal, a tournament that I love and that I have won five times in front of an audience that always welcomes me with love. I have no choice but to be careful at this point and think about my health.
