Suarez is the savior, Canada vs. Uruguay continues with penalty shootout

Canada versus Uruguay ended 2-2 in the second half in the match for third place at the 2024 Copa America. The match went to a penalty shootout.

Canada vs Uruguay in the battle for third place in the Copa America 2024 took place at the Bank of America Stadium, Sunday (14/7) morning WIB.

In the eighth minute, Uruguay managed to take a 1-0 lead thanks to a shot from Rodrigo Bentancur. Then in the 18th minute, Uruguayan winger Maximiliano Araujo threatened the Canadian defense. However, his shot was still blocked by the Canadian goalkeeper.

In the 21st minute, Canadian striker Tani Oluwaseyi threatened the Uruguayan goal. However, his header went off course and resulted in a corner.

From the corner, Canadian player Ismael Kone scored an aerial goal without looking at the goal. Kone freed himself to escape the offside trap, then executed an aerial kick to follow his teammate’s header.

In the 24th minute, Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellestri managed to get into Canada’s goal. However, the goal was disallowed because it was initially ruled offside.

In the 37th minute, Uruguay threatened Canada’s goal. However, Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez’s free kick still bounced slightly over the bar.

In the 40th minute, it was Canadian Jonathan Osorio’s header that hit the crossbar and only resulted in a corner.

In the 44th minute, Osorio threatened the Uruguayan goal again. Osorio’s shot was blocked by the Uruguayan goalkeeper. Then, the rebound was headed by Osorio, but it was pushed away by Uruguayan Nahitan Nandez who made a brilliant save.

There were no further goals scored until the end of the first half. Canada vs Uruguay ended 1-1 in the first half.

Early in the second half or in the 49th minute, Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez appeared to have an injury to his temple after accidentally elbowing the Canadian number 25 during the duel. However, Gimenez was able to continue his treatment after receiving medical treatment.

In the 60th minute, Canadian striker Tani Oluwaseyi’s shot threatened the Uruguayan goal. However, his shot was still directed directly at the Uruguayan goalkeeper.

In the 69th minute, there was chaos in front of the Canadian goal. Unfortunately, Luis Suarez was only slightly slower than the Canadian goalkeeper to reach the ball and score a goal.

In the 71st minute, Canadian player Alphonso Davies’ shot was blocked by the Uruguayan goalkeeper.

In the 73rd minute, an interesting moment occurred when Canadian player Ismael Kone was about to take the throw-in. Because the ball Kone was going to throw in was cleaned up first by his fellow Canadian reserve.

In the 78th minute, Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde’s shot hit the Canadian crossbar.

In the 80th minute, Jonathan David managed to give Canada a 2-1 lead over Uruguay. The goal started with Kone’s shot being blocked by the goalkeeper, then David slotted the rebound into the net.

In the 87th minute, the Canadian players were very disappointed as they lost a counterattack just after the ball hit the referee while they were already ahead in number of players.

Canada coach Jesser March was seen holding his head and then crouching down because he was disappointed with the referee’s decision to stop the game as his team launched a counterattack.

In the 90+3 minute, Luis Suarez broke through and shot. However, his shot was blocked by the Canadian goalkeeper.

In the 90+4th minute, Luis Suarez finally managed to save Uruguay with a shot that leveled the score at 2-2 after following Gimenez’s pass.

Until the end of the match, no further goals were scored. Canada against Uruguay drew in the second half and went to penalties.
