Taiwan and Canada sign memorandum of understanding on health sector

This is the first memorandum of understanding for the two countries. The agreement also aims to increase the effectiveness of the joint program.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday (5/11) that the cooperation was signed by Canada’s representative, Harry Tseng, and the executive director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, Jim Nickel.

“With the MOU, both parties can facilitate cooperation and increase resilience in responding to public health incidents,” Department of North American Affairs Director General Douglas Hsu told a conference. press release Thursday, quoted by Taipei TimeFriday (12/5).

“It is the first time that the two countries have established systematic cooperation in the field of public health,” he said, adding that it was the result of inter-ministerial efforts on both sides.

Hsu also said the MOU showed that Taiwan and Canada are taking concrete steps to strengthen their partnership.

Taiwan is confident in its ability to continue contributing to the world in public health, according to Hsu. He hopes Taiwan’s strengths can continue to attract like-minded partners around the world to seek deeper and broader cooperation. Not only in the field of public health, but also in the field of economy and trade.

He cited plans by the province of British Columbia (BC) to establish a trade and investment representative office in Taiwan to increase export and investment opportunities in the country.

The Canadian province announced the plan last Friday, identifying Taiwan as one of the valuable new markets that British Columbia will focus on for export growth, along with Mexico and Vietnam.

The BC government said the office would be created to help BC businesses gain better access to markets as part of a new trade diversification strategy.

“Priority areas for cooperation include agricultural products, energy and clean technology, forestry, manufacturing, information and communication industries, and biotechnology,” Hsu said.
