The Body Shop files for bankruptcy and closes all its stores in the United States and Canada

Liputan6.com, Jakarta British cosmetics company The Body Shop has announced that it is ceasing its operations in the United States. The Body Shop is also closing dozens of stores in Canada.

It is not without reason that The Body Shop, which operates in the United States, filed for bankruptcy. Previously, The Body Shop's UK headquarters said it would cease all operations in the United States effective March 1, 2024.

The company added that 33 of its 105 Canadian stores will soon begin liquidation sales and that “online sales in Canadian e-commerce stores will cease,” but that all Canadian locations will remain open for now.

“High inflation in recent years has hurt traditional retailers, particularly retailers like The Body Shop, which operate primarily in malls and cater to the struggling middle class,” as cited by CNNMonday (11/3/2024).

About Body Shop

The Body Shop, known for its products marketed as natural and sustainable, was founded in 1976 in England by human rights activist and environmentalist Anita Roddick. It was one of the first companies to ban animal testing for many of its products.

In 2019, the company was certified as a “B Corp,” a designation given to companies that meet certain standards for transparency and environmental awareness.

By 2023, the product had expanded to over 2,500 retail locations in over 80 countries and was available for purchase online in over 60 markets.
