Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – If there is place the busiest, there must be the loneliest place in this world. The loneliest place can be a place some people dream of.
The quietest place on Earth recorded in the Guinness World Record is the Anechoic Test Chamber at Orfield Laboratories, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. The noise level test around the room was carried out on November 19, 2021 and resulted in a measurement of -24.9 decibels.
reported from Guinness World Records, the measurements were made using a pair of Brüel & Kjær type 4145 microphones with their respective preamplifiers. This chamber is designed to allow accurate measurement of sound levels produced by different specimens. This chamber consists of a large stone and concrete chamber covered with a 10.5 cm thick steel plate and inside which is another smaller steel chamber supported by springs absorbing vibrations.
The place that has a high level of silence is not just the laboratory. Reporting by American scientist, Trevor Cox shared the quietest places he and his colleague, Diane Hope, had visited. They camped in the arid valley, Kelso Dunes, and found it very quiet. There is only the occasional sound of cars or things making noise. Most sound comes from the wind, and wind noise will fade or even disappear over time.
The loneliest places can be dominated by places like empty spaces, forests, deserts or other uninhabited places. However, the quietest places can also be in settlements. A scientific report once suggested that areas with sound levels below 55 decibels should be designated as quiet zones. This may seem impossible for city dwellers.
Hildegard Westerkamp, a composer from Canada, explained to Trevor in London that this quietness, like the sound of stones in the streets, is only heard in old towns where the streets are narrow and the buildings close together. Outside of the old towns, some villages can have a high degree of seclusion and serenity.
This is the loneliest place outside of empty space:
1. Olympic National Park, Washington, USA
One Square Inch of Silence in Washington Olympic National Park is located in the Hoh Rainforest area of the park. This wilderness offers a diverse range of natural sounds combined with a natural serenity.
2. Kelso Dunes, Mojave Desert, USA
This place is a place visited by Trevor and Diane. The Mojave Desert is famous for its harsh landscapes and environment which results in a lack of wildlife, planes or cars.
3. Mires of Kielder, England
Kielder Mires in Northumberland is the largest area of blanket marsh in England. It was found to be the quietest place in England based on factors such as distance from the nearest road or flight path.
4. Landmannalaugar, Iceland
Tourists say Landmannalaugar in Iceland is a deserted and lonely road. You can walk for miles without seeing anyone and there are very quiet volcanic fields.
5. Zurich, Switzerland
Quiet cities are hard to find, but according to the Worldwide Hearing Index 2017, Zurich is the quietest city in the world.
6. Makgadikgadi Pan, Botswana
This place is one of the largest salt flats in the world in the middle of the arid desert of northeastern Botswana. The only plants that live there are just a thin layer of green algae. Very few wildlife are present in the area during the dry season, making it the most isolated place on Earth.
7. Antarctica
This frozen continent has never been permanently occupied by humans with no towns or villages and is therefore one of the loneliest places on Earth.
8. Cenote Tak Be Ha, Mexico
An underwater cave on the Yucatan Peninsula is one of the last preserved places on earth. Among its nearly 7,000 caves, the Tak Be Ha cenote is considered one of the calmest. There you only occasionally hear the sound of dripping water.
