Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
The Weeknd is officially gone, at least in cyberspace. The Canadian musician has officially changed his stage name to his real name, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye.
reported CNNthe official name change can be seen on the Blinding Lights singer’s social media account on Monday (5/15) US time.
The profile name shown has now changed to “Abel Tesfaye” even though his account name is still @theweeknd. Meanwhile, the musician’s official web domain name still uses The Weeknd.
This is a follow up to Abel’s plan titled “kill The Weeknd” during an interview with W Magazine which was published on May 8.
“I’m on the path of cleaning right now. Soon it will come to the place and time I prepare to close the chapter of The Weeknd,” Tesfaye said.
He confirmed that the plan would not interfere with his music career. Tesfaye will always compose songs through another stage name that he has not yet prepared.
“I will continue to make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd,” he said.
“But, I still want to kill [nama] The weekend. And I will eventually. I will try to get rid of this skin and be reborn.”
On the same occasion, the so-called Abel Tesfaye also unveiled his latest musical projects.
He hinted that his latest work would complete the trilogy of albums After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022).
“The album I’m working on right now is probably my last fun moment as The Weeknd,” the 33-year-old soloist explained.
“It’s something I had to do. As The Weeknd, I said everything I could say,” he added.
Under the stage name The Weeknd, Tesfaye has released five studio albums since his debut with Kiss Land (2013). His most recent release, Dawn FM (2022), is his most critically acclaimed project to date.
Meanwhile, Blinding Lights from The Weeknd’s fourth album, After Hours, remains the most streamed song on Spotify, with over 3.4 billion streams as of February 2023.
